Her father, a powerful emperor, agreed to their union — but only if Popocatépetl proved himself in battle. So he left for war, sword in hand, her name in his heart.

But while he was away, lies took root.

A rival — jealous of their love — told Iztaccíhuatl that Popocatépetl had died in battle.

Grief-stricken, she collapsed. Her soul, they say, couldn’t bear the pain. She died waiting for him.

Until he found her gone.

Crushed by sorrow, Popocatépetl took her body and climbed to the highest peaks. There, he laid her on the earth and knelt beside her, refusing to leave her side.
